Blockchain & Digital Assets Research Resources

Public blockchain explorers and digital-asset research resources.

A curated guide to authoritative public blockchain explorers, cross-chain analytics surfaces, sanctioned-address lists, and community-attribution resources relevant to lawful research and integrity review of digital-asset matters.

How blockchain research works

Public blockchains expose every confirmed transaction on a permissionless ledger. This gives investigators visibility that traditional financial records do not provide, but with important limits:

  • The ledger shows transactions, not identities. Linking a wallet address to a real-world person or entity requires off-chain attribution — exchange records, public attestations, leaked datasets, OSINT, or pattern analysis.
  • Mixers, tumblers, and privacy chains (Monero, Zcash shielded transactions, Tornado Cash and successors) deliberately break the trail. Some are sanctioned in some jurisdictions.
  • Exchanges are the choke points. When funds flow on-chain to or from a recognised exchange, that exchange holds KYC records on the customer (subject to legal process to obtain).
  • Cross-chain bridges complicate tracing across networks. Specialist analytics tools follow funds across bridges; manual research often cannot.
  • Speed and finality vary by chain. Bitcoin confirms in roughly an hour; Ethereum and Solana finalise in seconds-to-minutes. Reorganisations are rare but possible on smaller chains.

For matters with legal effect — asset recovery, sanctions exposure, regulatory enforcement — primary records from the originating exchange and the chain itself are authoritative; analytics tools are aids, not proof.

Public blockchain explorers

Blockchair — Multi-chain explorer

Type: Public-chain block explorer. · Maintained by: Blockchair (independent operator).

Cost / access: Free for basic search. Paid tier for API access and bulk download.

Useful for: Multi-chain exploration — Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Bitcoin SV, Litecoin, Dogecoin, Dash, Groestlcoin, Zcash (transparent), Ethereum, Ripple, Stellar, Tezos, Cardano, Mixin, EOS, Monero (limited), TON, Avalanche, BNB Chain. Address lookup, transaction lookup, block lookup, simple statistics.

Limitations: A read-only explorer, not a forensic tool. For complex tracing, specialist analytics services are stronger.

Etherscan — Ethereum explorer

Type: Ethereum chain explorer. · Maintained by: Etherscan.

Cost / access: Free public search. Paid API tier for high-volume programmatic access.

Useful for: Ethereum mainnet addresses, transactions, smart contracts, ERC-20 token transfers, NFT activity, and contract source verification. Labels and tags many known exchanges and DeFi contracts.

Limitations: Ethereum mainnet only. Etherscan’s wallet labels are user-submitted in part and should be treated as starting points, not verified attribution. Layer-2 networks (Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, Polygon) have their own explorers.

Cost / access: Free.

Useful for: Bitcoin addresses, transactions, and blocks. One of the oldest and most widely-used Bitcoin explorers.

Limitations: Bitcoin only. Address-labelling is sparse compared to Ethereum.

Solscan — Solana explorer

Type: Solana chain explorer. · Maintained by: Solscan.

Cost / access: Free search. Paid API.

Useful for: Solana addresses, transactions, SPL tokens, and program (smart-contract) activity.

Limitations: Solana only.

Mempool.space — Bitcoin mempool and chain explorer

Type: Bitcoin mempool and chain visibility. · Maintained by: Mempool Space contributors (open source, independent operator).

Cost / access: Free.

Useful for: Real-time Bitcoin mempool visibility, fee estimation, transaction confirmation tracking, and Lightning Network node information. The technical resource most Bitcoin developers and analysts use.

Limitations: Bitcoin and Lightning only.

Sanctioned addresses and watchlists

US OFAC — Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) Crypto Addresses

Type: Sanctioned cryptocurrency addresses (consolidated within the SDN list). · Maintained by: US Department of the Treasury, Office of Foreign Assets Control.

Cost / access: Free, no registration. Downloadable.

Useful for: Identifying cryptocurrency addresses designated as Specially Designated Nationals — including addresses linked to ransomware operators, sanctioned mixers (Tornado Cash and successors), sanctioned entities, and individual sanctioned wallets. The authoritative US source.

Limitations: US sanctions only. EU, UK, UN, and other authorities maintain their own designations, which may or may not overlap. See International Sanctions & Watchlists for the broader sanctions landscape.

Community attribution and abuse databases

Chainabuse

Type: Community-submitted cryptocurrency abuse register. · Maintained by: TRM Labs (sponsoring the platform).

Cost / access: Free.

Useful for: Reports of cryptocurrency-related fraud, scams, phishing, ransomware, and theft submitted by victims and researchers. Useful as a lead source when investigating addresses, but reports are community-submitted and not authoritative.

Limitations: Community-submitted. Reports vary in quality. Use as an indicator, not as evidence.

Bitcoin Abuse Database

Type: Community-submitted Bitcoin-address abuse register. · Maintained by: Bitcoin Abuse community.

Cost / access: Free.

Useful for: Historical Bitcoin-address reports linked to ransomware, sextortion, blackmail, scams, and other abuse. One of the oldest community resources.

Limitations: Bitcoin only. Community-submitted. Many entries are old.

Analytics and discovery surfaces

Arkham Intelligence — Free tier

Type: Multi-chain entity-attribution and discovery surface. · Maintained by: Arkham (commercial product).

Cost / access: Free public search. Paid tier for advanced features.

Useful for: Graph-style discovery of relationships between addresses, with entity-attribution where Arkham has identified the holder (exchanges, funds, public figures, DeFi protocols, sanctioned actors). One of the more accessible discovery surfaces.

Limitations: Attribution accuracy varies; Arkham’s labels are not authoritative. Many addresses are unlabelled. Treat findings as leads, not proof.
