Why Canada is treated separately
Canadian law allocates responsibility between the federal government and the ten provinces (and three territories). Corporate registration can be federal or provincial. Courts include federal-level and provincial-level systems. Land titles, securities regulation, and consumer-protection law are largely provincial. Cross-Canadian diligence typically requires consulting both federal and the relevant provincial sources.

Corporations Canada — Federal Corporations Database

Cost / access: Free search and basic details. Some document downloads paid.
Useful for: Verifying federally-incorporated Canadian companies under the Canada Business Corporations Act (CBCA). Federally-incorporated entities can operate in any province.
Limitations: Federal only. Most Canadian companies are provincially incorporated; check the relevant provincial registry too.

Provincial corporate registries — selected
Type: Provincial corporate registers. · Maintained by: Each Canadian province’s corporate registry.
Cost / access: Cost and access vary by province.
Useful for: Provincially-incorporated companies, business names, and provincial registrations. Most Canadian operating companies use provincial incorporation.
Limitations: No national Canadian registry covers provincial filings; each province is separate.

CanLII — Canadian Legal Information Institute
Type: Aggregated Canadian case law and legislation. · Maintained by: Federation of Law Societies of Canada (not-for-profit).
Cost / access: Free.
Useful for: Consolidated full-text search across Supreme Court of Canada, Federal Court, Federal Court of Appeal, provincial courts of appeal, provincial superior courts, and major tribunals. Often the fastest starting point for Canadian case-law research.
Limitations: Coverage of lower-court materials and minor tribunals varies. Original judgments remain the authoritative source.

Useful for: Federal Court matters — judicial review of federal administrative decisions, immigration and refugee, intellectual property, admiralty, federal employment, tax (Tax Court is separate but federal), and Aboriginal-law matters.
Limitations: Federal-jurisdiction matters only. Provincial-court matters are separate.

Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) — National Registration Search
Type: Canadian securities-licensing register. · Maintained by: Canadian Securities Administrators (umbrella of provincial securities commissions).
Cost / access: Free.
Useful for: Verifying registered investment dealers, advisers, fund managers, and individuals across all provinces. Canada has no single federal securities regulator; the CSA coordinates provincial regulators.
Limitations: Combined provincial registrations only. Underlying authority remains with each provincial commission.
